    What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

    Also known as Medigap, this insurance helps cover costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Plans are sold by private insurers such as UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross, & many others.

    Who is eligible for a Medicare supplement plan?

    To be eligible for a Medicare supplement Plan you must have Medicare Part A and B to enroll. Your best enrollment window is the six months after you turn 65 and enroll in Part B—during this time, you can't be denied or charged more due to pre-existing conditions.

    What does a Medicare supplement plan cover?

    Depending on the plan, Medicare supplement plans can cover your out-of-pocket expenses from Medicare. Some plans may even offer limited emergency coverage while traveling abroad.  

    How many Medigap plans are there?

    There are 10 standardized plans labeled A through N. Each plan type has consistent benefits, but pricing and availability vary by provider and location.  Some plans are no longer available if you are new to Medicare after 2020 (plan F & C),

    Can I use Medicare supplement with Medicare Advantage?

    No. Medicare supplement plans only works with Original Medicare. If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you cannot use the Medicare supplement coverage at the same time.

    Do Medicare supplement plans cover prescription drugs?

    They do not. If you want drug coverage, consider enrolling in a separate Medicare Part D plan in addition to your Medicare supplement policy.

    Can I be denied a Medicare supplement policy?

    Not during your Open Enrollment Period. After that, acceptance may depend on health status and underwriting rules in your state. Some states have additional protections or guaranteed issue rights.

    You can compare plans by ZIP code with a local Medicare insurance advisor, licensed agent, or online quote tool. Premiums vary, even for the same plan letter, depending on location and insurer, as well as sex, tobacco status, and age.
